The Canning Ranch is 393 acres (with a 2,600 acre BLM lease) of easy access Elk and Antelope hunting terrain in New Mexico that also provides quality cattle grazing opportunities. The mild terrain with Gramma Grass and Pinon Junipers, with several water sources attracts the Elk and Antelope. Antelope tags are Over-The-Counter (OTC), and Elk tags are issued to the property through the E-plus system. Elk hunting gets better during the rut which runs into October, and a unique attribute of property are the rifle seasons that occur in early and mid October.
The deeded acres and BLM lease is set up to graze cattle with good water capacity and infrastructure. Approximately cattle capacity is 53 head, which graze on the Gramma Grass and utilize the multiple water sources. There is fencing, a large barn, covered hay storage, and a container for tack and feed. A main well fills the 4,500 gallon storage tank, which then feeds 3 drinkers and 2 dirt tanks.
The property is private and secluded with access off Hwy 60 and Hutton Ranch Road which is maintained year-round. Pie Town, NM is a small community nearby, and the larger town of Springerville, AZ is about an hour away with a hospital, airport, supplies and restaurants. There is plenty of outdoor recreation in the area like horseback riding, mountain biking and camping, and even a ski resort about a 1.5 hour drive away.

HUNTING
Several quality water sources coupled with mild terrain, and good gramma grass turf, makes it a great attraction for Elk and Antelope in August-October. Elk hunting is best primarily during the rut since the good water sources keeps cows around which then attracts the bulls. There is year-round Elk usage on the property, but hunting Elk in early October with a rifle is a big perk in Unit 12. The property's mild terrain and lack of topography, with light Pinon Juniper cover, also makes hunting enjoyable for youth, and hunters with limited mobility. The ranch is currently enrolled in E-plus in conjunction with another ranch owned by the same owner.
Elk: In 2023 the combined two ranches enrolled in the E-plus program were allocated several bull tags and several cow tags. One cow tag and one bull tag were used on the Canning Ranch. For the 2024 season, the two ranches remain enrolled together. Future owner will have to apply independently moving forward.
Archery season: September 1-14, and September 15-24
Rifle season: October 5-9 (rut hunt), October 12-16, October 19-23, and November 9-13
Antlerless hunts: November 16-20, 23-27 and November 30-December 4
Antelope: Tags can be purchased Over-The-Counter (OTC). This area can produce great bucks from 78"-85"+
Archery season: August 10-18
Any legal weapon: August 24-26 & October 5-7
CATTLE OPERATION
Great property for a small start up cattle business, a supplement property to keep replacement heifers, or a great equine property to keep rope steers and train horses. The ranch has good perimeter fencing and is divided into two large pastures, and has two traps and working pens. There is a 50'x80' barn with covered horse stalls and turn outs, and a covered hay storage with two 40' containers for tack and feed. There is plenty of room under the roof for equipment and materials. Although not totally complete, there is a good foundation from which to start. The headquarters has water and power at the structures. A great well that produces 30 gpm services a 4,500 gallon storage tank, 3 drinkers and two dirt tanks. A new 1.5hp pump was put in the well in 2022.
