WE ARE HONORED TO PRESENT FOR SALE THE HISTORIC VAN EATON RANCH, which lies north and east of Clarendon in Donley County Texas.
A Brief History of the Van Eaton family.
William Daniel Van Eaton was born in North Carolina in 1855. Mr. Van Eaton was orphaned at an early age, but because of his sheer determination to succeed, he earned a college education at Emory and Henry in Virginia. Upon his graduation in 1876, he moved to Texas to pursue a career in ranch management where he managed the Phelps Ranch in the Hill Country for a number of years.
William married Lucile Moncure in 1888, and they had Annie Maud Van Eaton James) and Allenia Archer Van Eaton (McMurtry).
The family relocated to Clarendon, also known as Saints Roost, in early 1902. The Van Eatons were drawn to Donley County because of the ranching opportunities the county afforded and the opportunity for their daughters to receive a quality education at Clarendon College. Mr. Van Eaton became a member of the Masonic Lodge and served on the board of the Methodist Church for many years. After his death in 1935, his wife managed the Van Eaton property until her death in 1955 when half of the land passed to Archer Van Eaton McMurtry and her husband Jo McMurtry. The other half passed to Annie Maud Van Eaton James.
The original land remains in the Van Eaton and James families.
