Region & Climate

Santa Fe boasts 360 days of sunshine, and at 7,000 feet in elevation, four robust seasons. Skiing, snow showing, snowboarding, cycling, rock climbing, river rafting, fishing and hunting are all common outdoor activities in the area. The late summer does have a monsoon season with sporadic rainfall, and we do get snow in the winter, but most of the time the air is crisp, the sun is shining and the beauty is imminent.

History

Diablo Canyon is a part of the Caja Del Rio plateau formation. This beautiful desert gorge includes prehistoric petroglyphs from the Native Americans who lived in and traversed the area, desert wildlife, indigenous plants, volcanic rock formations, and the flowing waters of the Rio Grande. It is situated near the northern end of the Cerros del Rio volcanic field, which includes about 50 to 60 identified volcanic vents that experienced dozens of eruptions about 2.4 to 2.7 million years ago. The whole canyon is scattered with dark-colored rocks covered with tiny bubble-shaped cavities, that were expelled from the earth as molten blobs and solidified in the air, sometimes building up in cinder cone shapes as well. At one point the canyon even had a lava lake! The geology, history and nature in this place are stunningly unique. It is an otherworldly place and captures the imagination.

Location

The property is a 40 minute drive to Santa Fe’s downtown plaza, and all the amenities of city life, mostly down a maintained gravel county road. The nearest airport is the Santa Fe airport, at the South end of the city, a 20 minute drive from the plaza.
