The Piney Woods ecoregion stretches across East Texas and portions of Arkansas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma. As the name suggests, this area of coniferous forest is dominated by several species of pine as well as other hardwood trees like oak and hickory. The Piney Woods account for nearly all of the commercial timber production in the state. Along with extensive private timber holdings, the Piney Woods region of East Texas is home to four national forests including Angelina National Forest, Sabine National Forest, Davy Crockett National Forest, and Sam Houston National Forest. In total, these public lands cover some 630,000 acres and are home to a diverse array of wildlife species including foxes, deer, opossums, cougars, and more. The southern portion of the Piney Woods is also home to Big Thicket National Preserve, an important habitat for various migratory bird species and one of two UNESCO Biosphere Reserves in Texas. Of the $491 million in rural land and property currently listed for sale in the Piney Woods South Texas region, Polk County has the most land listed for sale based on total acres. Polk County also recorded the most sales activity based on sales recorded in this part of the state through the Land Network Comparable Sales program last month.
